General Description:
Water purification unit, skid mounted with a capacity of 5 cubic meters per hour at 20 m (TMH) Total Manometric Head, Petrol operated generator.
Technical Specifications:
The unit is designed to purify 5 cubic meters per hour at 20 meters TMH of surface water from rivers, lakes or shallow wells having maximum turbidity of 20 (N.T.U.) Nephelometric Turbidity Units.
The unit is capable of producing drinking water free of the physical and bacteriological contaminations according to the WHO recommendations for drinking water.
The unit will not take care of industrial contamination, such as hydrocarbons, chemical waste, etc.
All material used in the unit that are in contact with water must be certified and approved for use with drinking water.
As standard, the unit is skid mounted, but can also be supplied as trailer mount (see below Optional Supplies (c)); the system also does NOT contain: Water Storage and Distribution kit (Collapsible water storage tanks, connection hose kit and tap stand kit). This Distribution kit can, if required, be ordered and supplied together with the Purification Unit (see below Optional Supplies (b)).
The following steps are followed in the water treatment process:
1. Surface water intake: Floating raw water suction by means of an electrical submersible pump or by a diesel driven motor pump with adequate suction hose, inlet strainer of less than 2 mm openings, and a feed hose up to the treatment unit.
2. Pre-chlorination by NaDCC (or by on-site available Sodium or Calcium Hypochlorite, see also below option (d)); this includes the container and equipment for the preparation of the solution and/or dosing of the predetermined amount of Chlorine.
3. Coagulation by Aluminum Sulphate; this includes the container and equipment for the preparation of the solution and/or dosing of the predetermined amount of Aluminum Sulphate
4. Flocculation; a flocculation unit allowing sufficient contact time for adequate creation of floc for sedimentation or filtration.
NOTE: Sedimentation; this compartment is not included in this basic treatment unit for air shipment. To be ordered separately, if desired (see below Optional Supplies (a)).
5. Filtration; this includes a sand filter and an activated carbon filter. The filters are complete with all the back wash piping, valves, manometers and controls.
6. Disinfection; by Chlorination. A dose of residual Chlorine is added to guard against subsequent contamination during storage. For chemical shipping reasons NaDCC is shipped instead of Calcium Hypochlorite HTH. However, once on-site, the dosing equipment can be employed with other chlorination products such as HTH and Sodium Hypochlorite (see also below option for Solar powered Chlorine Generator for on-sire production of Sodium Hypochlorite solution - option (d)).
Sedimentation: if sedimentation/settlement of floc must be processed, an ADDITIONAL water reservoir (settlement compartment) should be ordered separately. It is preferably an option with the purification unit S0005846 for Sea Shipment.
About one hour should be allowed for a contact time for the chemicals to react and the solids to settle. The sedimentation chamber should have all the facilities for the periodic removal of the sediments as well as passing the clarified water to the next stage of treatment.
Power System: The purification unit is of autonomous operation. This is provided by means of one (or two) petrol driven motor pump(s) supplied with the unit.
The system is supplied with:
Suction hose
Consumables for minimum three (up to six) months of operation.
A set of spare parts needed for all the parts including the pump, sufficient for 2000 hours of normal operation.
A set of tools for the operator as needed for the normal operation and maintenance.
A simple visual water testing kit.
Operating manuals in (English, French, Spanish and Arabic).
While the standard system does NOT contain:
Distribution kit (Collapsible water storage tanks of 10 000 litres, connection hose kit and tap stand kit). This Distribution kit can, if required, be ordered to be supplied together with the Purification Unit as per below:
Optionally the System can be supplied together with:
a)Sedimentation Kit: For sedimentation/settlement of floc to be processed, supplied as an intermediate water reservoir (or as special settlement compartment) with necessary accessories.
A contact time for about one hour should be allowed for the chemicals to react and the solids to settle. The sedimentation chamber should have all the facilities for the periodic removal of the sediments as well as passing the clarified water to the next stage of treatment - Order w/catalogue product number S0005872.
b) Water Storage kit composed of a double set of (2) collapsible water storage tanks (WATER BLADDERS) of each 10 000 litres capacity (of a quality similar to UNICEF catalogue product number 0005834) with 20 meters hose (of a quality similar to UNICEF catalogue product number 0008029) for connecting the unit to the tank with the required quick coupling.
- For Water Storage kit (without Tap Stands) - Order w/catalogue product number S0005873.
- For Water Distribution Tap Stand kit (1x6 taps) - Order w/catalogue product number S0005831
c) One-axle trailer mounting with storage room(s) for the Purification unit pump, hoses and accessories - Order w/catalogue product number S0005874.
d) Chlorine Generator (Electro-Chlorinator) kit for on-site production of Sodium Hypochlorite solution by electrolysis of salt water (brine) - in replacement of HTH or NaDCC purchase. This Chlorine Generator is Solar powered in order to be used with the non-electric water purification units. The kit contains the electrode with adequate solar panel and accessories.
For Chlorine Generator - Order w/catalogue product number S0005876
Transport and Storage:
The unit is packed in wooden boxes on the skid or the trailer as the option selected.
Store in a dry and well ventilated room
Weight/Volume/Dimensions:
Estimated weight: 800 kg
Estimated volume: 5 cbm
Estimated dimensions: 2200 x 1200 x 1800 mm
Instruction for use:
The unit is used for providing drinking water for about 5,000 residents or displaced population in cases of emergency where the source is surface water having not more than 20 NTU. In the water treatment process, these steps have to be followed:
1. Raw water suction and straining; by submersible pump or by motor pump complete with the suction hose, and inlet strainer of approximately 2 mm openings.
2. Pre-chlorination by Calcium Hypochlorite or NaDCC.
3. Coagulation/flocculation by Aluminum Sulphate.
4. Sedimentation is optional; sedimentation chamber must be ordered clearly with the order if required. It has all the facilities for the periodic removal of the sediments as well as passing the clarified water to the next stage of treatment. It can also be added to the system later.
5. Filtration; by a sand filter and an activated carbon filter.
6. Back washing; a back washing system is integrated in the system.
7. Disinfection; by Chlorination. a dose of residual Chlorine is added to guard against subsequent contamination during storage.
Regularly maintain the engine according to the manual (On the SD Intranet a sample template is posted to assist with the maintenance of the engine). See the generator maintenance sheet via the following link:
